Free Online Teaching Resources-Formal vs Informal Writing

Here is another free online teaching resources- Formal vs Informal Writing for all hard working teachers.  This is also perfect for persistent students who would love to review or master this topic on their own.  This is an interactive online teaching resource about Formal and Informal Writing.  Since many of you have requested for me to explain in more details about each slide, that then will be done.

Let’s start:

This Free Online Teaching Resoruces starts with the learning goal for today, and what the students need to accomplish for this lesson.  Afer that, let the students watch the youtube video just to break the ice before the lesson proper.  We normally call this as a little warm-up or “hook” activity.  I am pretty sure the students will love this video and give them the right mood for the lesson today.  The video is about how “ways of commuincation” have evolved.  I did enjoy that.

Pages 2-4

These pages are great to assess the students prior learning.  There are some images on each page and the students are asked about any ideas they have about these images.  I had interesting results from my students when I checked their work.  Not many of them knew ofcourse the snail mail envelope.  Discussions using these pages are interesting because you will see how students respond in wonderment.  It is also an amazing time to connect the past to what we are having right now.

You can let the students work on their own or with a buddy in a break out room for 10 minutes for these pages.  We are using zoom in the class and we always utilize break out room.  In that way the students are given time to freely interacti with their classmates.

Pages5-7

These pages encourage students to express their opinions.  I normally remind my students to always give as much opinions as they can if given a chance.  What I notice with the students these days is that, not many of them are used to answer in complete sentences when asked.  So if you are presenting this, I advise you to remind your students to answer each question in complete and correct sentences.

Again, it was a wonderful experience for me as a teacher reading my students opinions about the questions asked.  I did enjoy how they all persisted to express their thoughts.  I am stil smiling now recalling it.  I hope you too will enjoy your students’ thoughts about these.

This page is linked to another youtube video that best explains the differences between formal and informal writing.  My students did enjoy and learnt effectively from that video.  Right after they watched, we had a little time summarizing important points mentioned from the video.  The video I believe is staright forward and is perfect form my grade 4 class.

Once this exciting page is done, the Venn Diagram awaits them all.  Let’s hop in to page 9.

Venn Diagram has seriously been an exciting and effective teaching tool for me.  My class has been showing consistent improvement with the way yhey use Venn Diagram.  So going back, right after page 8, they can proceed working on with this Venn Diagram.  I gave my class 10 minutes alone for them to complete this page.  I did see excellent results and mainy because the video they have watched was just almost perfect.

Now it’s time for some thinking chair.  My students loved this and I am hoping yours will love it too.

Page10- Exit Ticket

To conclude this lesson, this exit ticket is perfect.  I gave my students 10 minutes for them to fill this in and everyone did make it on time.  They all of course loved the RSVP and ASAP bonus items.  I bet the children of today got plenty of abbreviations they are using.  Asking them some of those will make them feel good.  Students get too excited if they relaized that there are things that teachers don’t know too.  Those “IKR”, “SMH”, and many more.  For me, this is extablishing rapport with my students.

Extablishing rapport with yours students is vital to have an effective and interactive class.  I bet you all know that by now.

Ending page

Reminding my students to stay more healthy during our online learning is always on my top priority.  So this end page of the slide is highly important as other pages.  We do need healthy snacks too teachers, so get those fruits in the bowl now.

Staying healthy is a new hobby.
