November Notes: Joy in the Midst of Trials

November arrived like a gentle breeze after the storm. October had been heavy, filled with challenges that tested both body and spirit, so as the new month began, I chose to start with self-care. Massages, nail therapy, and quiet coffee moments became my sanctuary. Each small act of care reminded me that healing doesn’t always come in grand gestures—it often comes in the simple routines that restore peace.

Despite the weight of October, November carried a different rhythm. It was a month of celebration, reflection, and resilience. It was also the month of our wedding anniversary, a reminder of love’s endurance through trials. After the children’s hospitalizations earlier in the year, I realized how precious it is to celebrate every moment we are given. My love and I decided that this year, instead of one large gathering, we would celebrate gradually with the people who have stood as pillars of support in our lives here in Cambodia. These friends and family members share our horizon, our values, and our journey. Celebrating with them felt deeply meaningful, as if the universe itself was witnessing our gratitude.

Hospital Journeys and Tuktuk Conversations

November also brought hospital visits for Franco’s follow-up checkups. Twice we made the journey, and each time I found myself reflecting on how quickly time passes. At 17 years old, Franco is no longer the little boy I once carried to appointments, yet sitting beside him in the tuktuk, talking about life’s ins and outs, I realized how these ordinary rides had become extraordinary memories. Relief washed over me when the results came back positive, and I reminded the children to be mindful of their choices—food, habits, routines.

As a parent, I sometimes wish I could watch over them forever, but I know that’s impossible. Instead, I speak as much wisdom as I can now, hoping my words will echo in their hearts long after. With Franco stepping into young adulthood, these rides reminded me that parenting is not only about guiding but also about listening, sharing, and cherishing the fleeting moments of togetherness. Each conversation felt like a bridge between past and future, a reminder that even as he grows more independent, our bond remains strong.

Sports, Sunsets, and Strength

November was also a month of sports. Volleyball games continued, and both children joined the Eagles Basketball team. Watching them prepare for tryouts was a mix of nerves and pride. Their determination inspired me, and I felt grateful to witness their growth firsthand. I could see how much they were learning—not only about the game itself but also about discipline, teamwork, and resilience. Each practice session became a reminder that sports are more than competition; they are life lessons in disguise.

My own highlight came unexpectedly—one afternoon I decided to run on our rooftop. What began as a simple jog turned into a 10k run, and as I reached the finish, the sky transformed into a fiery sunset. Running under that glowing sky felt magical, a phenomenon that reminded me of the beauty in persistence. Sunsets have always held meaning for me, and that evening, the run became more than exercise—it became a symbol of resilience and joy. The rhythm of my footsteps matched the rhythm of gratitude in my heart, and I felt renewed strength to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

Theonee’s volleyball finals added another layer of meaning to the month. She endured physical and emotional pressure, and though she longed for first place, we celebrated her effort and strength. That night, we feasted together as a family, reminding ourselves that success is not only measured in trophies but in courage and perseverance. Watching her push through the intensity of the finals reminded me that growth often comes in moments of struggle, and that true victory lies in showing up wholeheartedly, even when the outcome is uncertain.

Family Gatherings and Rooftop Friendships

November also gave us moments of togetherness. We hosted a barbecue night with parents and siblings, celebrating health, peace, and our anniversary. The cooler weather, the breeze, and the laughter made it unforgettable. Soon after, we welcomed friends to our rooftop for another gathering. Despite a light drizzle, the evening was filled with joy, good food, and easy conversations. These gatherings reminded me how blessed we are to have people who share life with us.

The meals we prepared—mashed potatoes, hummus, salads, squash spaghetti, and spring rolls—were not just food but symbols of hospitality. Sharing them with friends felt like opening our hearts. Even the drizzle became part of the memory, a reminder that joy often shines through small inconveniences. What made these nights even more special was the way conversations flowed so naturally, from lighthearted jokes to deeper reflections about family, work, and dreams. The rooftop setting, with its open sky and gentle breeze, created a sense of freedom and intimacy. These gatherings were not only about eating together but about weaving bonds that strengthen our community and remind us that life’s greatest treasures are found in shared moments.

Journey4Us and the Gift of Books

One of the month’s highlights was the Journey4Us Book Donation Drive. We collected nearly 300 Christian books and donated them to St. Jude Thaddeus International School in Phnom Penh. Gathering donations from generous people was a joy, and I treasured adding a few to my own reading corner at home. Books have always been companions to me, steady and waiting, and I felt immense gratitude for the kindness of those who contributed.

The drive reminded me that generosity multiplies. Each book carried not only words but also hope, encouragement, and wisdom. Knowing that children would read them and perhaps find inspiration made the effort worthwhile. I could picture classrooms filled with curious minds, opening pages that might spark faith, resilience, or even a lifelong love of reading. The process of collecting, sorting, and delivering the books also became a journey of connection—meeting donors from different parts of Phnom Penh, hearing their stories, and realizing how a simple act of giving can ripple outward. For me, it was more than a project; it was a reminder that when we share knowledge, we share light.

Farewell to Phoebe

November also carried sorrow. We said goodbye to Phoebe, our beloved pit bull. Her passing left me in tears, and I honored her memory by revisiting old photos and remembering the joy she brought us. I missed the small rituals—buying her treats, seeing her excitement when I returned home. Farewell, my friend. Your presence made life’s trials bearable, and your absence reminds me of the fragility of joy.

Phoebe’s story was deeply intertwined with our family. She originally belonged to my sister, and when my sister passed away in 2021, my parents lovingly took over her care. From then on, Phoebe became not only a pet but also a living connection to my sister’s memory. Watching my parents nurture her with patience and affection was a comfort, and it gave Phoebe a second chapter filled with love. Losing her now feels like closing another door, yet I am grateful for the years she remained with us, carrying forward my sister’s legacy in her own gentle way.

Grief is never easy, but it is also a testament to love. Phoebe’s life, though brief, left an imprint on ours. Remembering her reminded me that even in loss, there is gratitude—for the time we had, for the joy she gave, and for the lessons of unconditional love.

Badminton, Beanies, and PTSC

Physical activities continued—gym sessions, badminton Sundays, and even beanie-clad games in the cool weather. These routines kept us grounded, reminding us that health is both a discipline and a gift. I loved how even simple matches of badminton became family rituals, filled with laughter, playful competition, and the joy of moving together. The cooler evenings made those games feel refreshing, almost symbolic of the balance we try to keep between work, family, and wellness.

Toward month’s end, the much-awaited PTSC (Parent-Teacher-Student Conference) reminded me of the teamwork it takes to raise children. Each conversation with teachers was heartfelt, and hearing praise for Franco and Theonee filled me with pride. Theonee’s selection for a TedEd Talk was another highlight, showing how supported and encouraged our children are. Sitting across from teachers who spoke with such sincerity, I felt both humbled and grateful. Their words were not just about grades or achievements, but about character, resilience, and the way our children inspire others.

As parents, my love and I often ask ourselves what we did to deserve such beautiful children. The truth is, it takes a village, and we are grateful for the teachers, friends, and family who walk alongside us. PTSC left me emotional, but also deeply motivated—to do better, to strive harder, and to continue nurturing the gifts entrusted to us. Walking out of each meeting, my heart was full, my eyes teary, and my spirit renewed with the reminder that parenting is a journey of partnership, love, and endless learning.

Adulting and Obligations

We closed November with civil and legal obligations, lining up for documents alongside fellow OFWs. Adulting felt heavy, but sharing the load with my love made it manageable. Even in these mundane tasks, I found gratitude—gratitude for the opportunity to fulfill responsibilities, for the support of my husband, and for the resilience that keeps us moving forward.

The long queues, the paperwork, and the waiting hours reminded me of the unseen side of life abroad—the part that requires patience, endurance, and a quiet kind of strength. Around me, I saw fellow workers carrying their own burdens, each with stories of sacrifice and hope. In those moments, I realized that adulting is not just about ticking boxes or securing documents; it is about standing shoulder to shoulder with others who share the same journey. These obligations reminded me that life is not only about celebrations but also about responsibilities. Balancing both is part of adulthood, and though it can be tiring, it is also rewarding. The weight of responsibility becomes lighter when carried together, and even the most ordinary tasks can hold meaning when done with love and purpose.

Closing Reflections

November was a tapestry woven with joy and trials. It was a month of healing through self-care, celebrating love and family, supporting children in their endeavors, giving through books, grieving a beloved pet, and fulfilling responsibilities. Through it all, I felt anchored in love, resilience, and gratitude.

As I look back, I realize November was not just a series of events—it was a reminder of life’s rhythm, where sorrow and joy often walk hand in hand. The massages and coffee moments taught me the importance of pausing; the hospital rides reminded me of the fragility of health and the gift of time; the sports games showed me the beauty of determination; and the book drive revealed how generosity multiplies. Even the grief of losing Phoebe carried meaning, teaching me that love leaves traces long after presence fades.

As December approaches, I carry with me the lessons of November: that joy can coexist with trials, that small acts of care matter, and that togetherness is the greatest gift. I am reminded that resilience is not about avoiding hardship but about finding light within it. Thank you for journeying with me through these reflections. I look forward to sharing December’s notes with you soon, with the hope that each month continues to reveal new layers of gratitude, growth, and grace.

Signing off,

Teriz
