Job List in Cambodia #3

You are in Cambodia, you are looking for a job, you got a call, and now you are wondering how to slay that job interview.  Let me give you my 5 personal tips on how to prepare for a job interview.

Tip#1 Know the company you are applying for

There is nothing worse than being speechless when asked “Have you heard about our company?” or  “Do you have any idea of what our company stands for?”.  Knowing as much as you can about the history, profile, belief, or vision of the company you are applying for will absolutely give you that little boost of confidence during the interview.  So, before your interview, conduct a research about the company.  Avoid thinking that your interview would just be the spur of the moment.

Tip#2- Review your CV

Being aware of what you have achieved and overcome in your previous employment will give you a little clarity of what you are trying to sell during the interview.  Your ability and skills.  Remind yourself of certain important situations in the past that are vital to the position you are applying for.  Stay focused on the skills mentioned on your CV that could be the top of the line among other applicants.

Tip#3- Time and Tact

Quite obvious! Make sure you are arriving at your interview before the said appointment time.  Your arrival time during your interview is a clear manifestation of how you arrive at your work.  No employer wants to hire any staff who arrives late.  Duh?  Tact!  Have this with you at all times even after you’re hired.  Saying things at the right time, considering your situation before you speak, and being discreet once needed will catapult you to a job.  People with tact know how to state an argument or an opinion without offending anybody.  Time, tact, together!  Remember!

Tip#4- Look and Listen

Your appearance is the first thing any hiring manager can notice from you.  Hiring managers see you from afar before hearing anything from you.  Make sure you look presentable, appropriate, and clean.  Ofcourse, once hired, keep this up!  As I once read, “dress to success, not to impress”.  Interviews could be nerve-racking.  Stay focused and have your sense of hearing function at it’s best while talking to the hiring manager.  Another worse thing to feel is that you knew you failed to hear the question clearly, but you were too shy to ask for clarification, and you ended up answering with a smile.  Worse thing could be that, the hiring manager gave you a smile as well, and you both would see each other’s awkward faces.  You failed to listen, you didn’t ask, and you lost your chance!  We don’t want that.

Tip#5- Be friendly, yet smart!

Some applicants could be way too friendly during the interview, making his or herself look very unreal.  What I mean is that, try to establish rapport with the hiring manager, making sure he or she feels that you are an easy person to talk to.  Being easy to talk to at the workplace is a gem for any boss or employer.  At the same time, be smart.  Present your self as a person who possesses quick-witted intelligence during your interview.  Speak with substance and knowledge.  In short, be sensible.
